Reading Realities -

The 73 activities in this publication use the newspaper to help students develop crucial reading skills: skimming, finding the main idea, distinguishing fact from opinion, interpreting editorials and analyzing theme.

Special Education and Cooperative Learning - Adaptable for K - 12

The 88-page curriculum guide was developed to promote the needs of teachers working with special education students. The wide variety of newspaper-related activities are quite flexible and can be implemented in numerous ways. The activities are divided into four sections by competency levels.

A Closer Look at Newspaper Advertising -

This 36 page curriculum can be used to teach media literacy. It provides specific information on newspaper advertising. Activities help students interpret ads and create persuasive messages of their own.

Science in the News -

Teachers and students can incorporate the daily newspaper into their scientific explorations. Seventy NIE activities focus on general science and technology, environmental and earth science, health and nutrition and scientific careers.

Understanding and Creating Political Cartoons -

This resource contains 54 student activity sheets and suggestions for helping students interpret editorial cartoons and draw their own.

Drawing Conclusions -

A nationally known cartoonist created 26 editorial cartoons specifically for this curriculum guide. Analysis questions corresponding to the cartoons promote critical thinking and enhance cognitive skills. An introduction provides a history of editorial cartoons and instructions on how to dissect a cartoon for greater understanding.

This guide presents activities to help students evaluate and become more informed consumers of print and electronic media messages. Lessons show students how to access, analyze, evaluate and produce media messages.

These math activities help students apply simple calculation, estimation and problem-solving skills to real world situations. Newspaper advertising, financial news and indices, sports pages, weather forecasts and comic strips are used to reinforce concepts such as simple geometry, measurements, ratios, percentages and statistics.
